The History of Radio in Michigan

May 4, 2017
07:00 PM / 08:30 PM
Loutit District Library, 407 Columbus Avenue, Grand Haven, MI 49417 616.842.5560 x222

The Early Days of Radio in Michigan presents the history of the first commercial stations and their programs. As public interest increased and radio set sales skyrocketed, radio soon became an all-American pastime. Some of the best shows originated from Detroit because the city had some of the first radio stations in the country. Based on years of research, this lecture and visual presentation will include old photographs and soundtracks of early radio shows that are sure to recall many wonderful memories. This program is presented by the Tri-Cities Historical Museum, WGHN, and Loutit District Library.

Yes, There is A Michigan Accent

May 11, 2017
07:00 PM / 08:30 PM
Loutit District Library, 407 Columbus Avenue, Grand Haven, MI 49417 616.842.5560 x222

Edward McClelland, author of How to Speak Midwestern, will present Yes, there is A Michigan Accent revealing that Michiganders have an accent and that it’s becoming more distinct from the rest of the United States because of Michigan’s participation in the Northern Cities Vowel Shift, the most significant change in English vowel pronunciation in a thousand years. It’s what makes “can” sound like “cayen,” “pop” sound like “pahhhp” and “seven” sound like “suvun.”
Grand Haven's retail store, The Bookman, will have books available to purchase and sign following the program.
