Striving for ways to reduce energy consumption is nothing new to the maintenance service area. They have just completed a three year program, conducted by the State's Retired Engineer Technical Assistance Program (RETAP), focused on reducing energy consumption and improving recycling habits. Depending on the magnitude of the RETAP recommendations, they were implemented, scheduled for implementation or factored into future projects.
The staff members in this relatively small service area are responsible for the operation and maintenance of many behind-the-scene facility elements as well as many highly visible landmarks that add to the city's character and charm. The former are comprised of elements that often are not appreciated until they are malfunctioning, missing or broken. The latter include maintaining the lights along the channel and on the south pier, installing the holiday lights on Washington Avenue, hanging special-event banners and repairing the boardwalk at East Grand River Park.
