Custodian

The City of Grand Haven is seeking a fulltime Custodian. The main duties of this position will include cleaning and maintaining offices, meeting rooms and public areas of all City buildings; set up, arrange and tear down furniture and audio-visual equipment for classes, meetings, and special events; stock and replace light bulbs and bathroom supplies; and report damaged or broken doors, windows, walls and equipment requiring involved repairs. The successful candidate will provide friendly, courteous and helpful communication when interacting with staff and the general public.

This position requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Previous custodial experience is preferred including knowledge of the practices and safety issues involved in cleaning public facilities. The successful candidate will have proven ability to work independently and complete assignments in a timely manner as well as experience in dealing with the public and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. An employee in this position must have the strength, stamina and physical coordination required to participate in heavy physical labor such as lifting extremely heavy items and walking for extended periods of time.

2016 Summer Employment Opportunities

The City of Grand Haven regularly hires individuals to fill positions for the summer months. These openings are in a variety of areas and are part time and full time positions. All summer employees are a vital link between the City of Grand Haven and its residents and visitors and therefore, all candidates must be prepared to function in an “ambassador” role in addition to completing the tasks of their assigned position.

All positions require individuals to be at least 18 years of age and to be available for the entire summer season without long breaks or vacations. Most positions require work on weekends and holidays. All positions require work during the week of Coast Guard Festival. Previous proven work experience is preferred and solid work references are expected.

The following areas will be hiring for the summer season of 2016:

WATERFRONT

Staff are responsible seven days per week for the clean and orderly appearance of the City from the waterfront stadium to the pier including parking lots, trashcans, dumpsters, skate park, public restrooms and downtown streetscapes. They also oversee the activities at the waterfront stadium.

MINI GOLF

Staff are responsible for greeting guests, taking fees for participation, maintaining the grounds in and around the Mini Golf area on Chinook Pier. This position requires exceptional customer service skills and the ability to maintain focus on a variety at tasks at one time.

PARKS

Staff are responsible on week days for lawn care associated with the City properties, parks and green space which includes Mulligan’s Hollow, Marina, Harbor Island, Lake Forest Cemetery, etc. Their responsibilities include trimming trees, mowing grass, planting and weeding flower beds, and maintaining the planters throughout downtown. Individuals working in this area do not work weekends and are scheduled for 40 hours per week.

TROLLEY DRIVER

Drivers are responsible for driving the trolley while narrating a description of Grand Haven and its various attributes. Staff are required to achieve a CDL once hired in order to safely and effectively operate the trolley and be responsible for the safety of the passengers. This position requires exceptional customer service skills and an outgoing personality.
