Public Works Director

Grand Haven, Michigan (population 10,412) is seeking an experienced public works professional to lead our full service Public Works Department. Our current staff includes 51 full time and 20 seasonal employees. The Public Works Director is appointed by and is responsible to the City Manager who is appointed by a five member City Council.

Grand Haven is a compact (6.37 square miles) Lake Michigan shoreline community with a seasonal influx of thousands of resort residents and visitors. As the cultural/entertainment hub for the surrounding, developed tri-city area we serve a year ‘round population of approximately 40,000.

The City of Grand Haven is seeking a Public Works Director to manage all aspects of the Department. The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall management of Public Works operations and personnel including engineering, streets, water treatment and distribution, wastewater collection, facilities maintenance, Harbor Island, motor pool, cemetery and parks. In addition this individual will serve as liaison to several boards and commissions.

A Bachelor’s Degree in business, public administration, civil engineering or a related field is required. Licensure as a Professional Engineer is strongly preferred. Seven or more years of management and coordination experience is desired as well as proven supervisory skills.

Mechanic – Part Time

Harbor Transit is seeking a Mechanic for a part time opening. Under general supervision of the Motor Pool Crew Leader and in conjunction with the fulltime Harbor Transit Mechanic, this individual performs a variety of automotive and equipment repairs and preventative maintenance tasks. Primary responsibility will be working with the bus and trolley fleet of Harbor Transit.

A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required for this position. In addition, technical training in general shop and auto repair work is necessary. Three or more years of responsible experience in repairing and overhauling a variety of heavy or other automotive and power driven equipment is preferred. A State Mechanics Certificate in automotive brakes, electric and suspension systems is preferred.

This position has a starting salary of $20.11 per hour. This position is available as a result of the increased size and complexity of the Harbor Transit bus and trolley system.
