Mechanic

The City of Grand Haven is seeking a Mechanic, assigned to Harbor Transit, to perform a variety of automotive and equipment repairs and preventive maintenance tasks. The successful candidate will have proven experience working with vehicles of many types including passenger vans and buses. The ability to plan and coordinate work activities based on written expectations; to prepare and maintain various records and reports; order and maintain inventory of supplies and parts; without direct supervision is critical.

High school diploma or GED from an accredited high school, including or supplemented by technical training in general shop and auto repair work. State Mechanics Certificate in automotive brakes, electrical and suspension systems is required. In addition, the successful candidate will be required to have automotive certifications appropriate for the fleet being serviced and a knowledge of or ability to learn about the State and Federal regulations regarding barrier free transportation as they relate to vehicle maintenance and skill in repairing and maintaining lift equipment on public transit vehicles that assist the disabled. Employee must provide their own tools necessary to perform the work assigned.

Three or more years of responsible experience in repairing and overhauling a variety of heavy or other automotive and power-driven equipment is preferred. State of Michigan Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger endorsement as well as tanker and air brake endorsements, a satisfactory driving record, and the ability to maintain one throughout employment.

Starting Salary is $19.33/hour with excellent benefits package.

Harbor Transit – Part Time Driver

The City of Grand Haven is seeking several Part time Drivers for the Harbor Transit Multi Modal Transportation Authority. The successful candidates will accept radio dispatched requests for service and safely transport passengers within the designated service area. Additional responsibilities include collecting fares from passengers, conducting daily inspections of the vehicle, completing daily vehicle logs and other assigned or related tasks.

This position requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent and a State of Michigan Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger endorsement. Experience operating vehicles for public transportation is strongly desired. The successful candidates must possess excellent people skills and be able to deliver extraordinary customer service. The ability to complete the Harbor Transit Training Program is also a condition of hire.

2015 Summer Employment Opportunities

The City of Grand Haven regularly hires individuals to fill positions for the summer months. These openings are in a variety of areas and are all seasonal positions.

All positions require individuals to be at least 18 years of age and to be available for the entire summer season without long breaks or vacations. Most positions require work on weekends and holidays. All positions require work during the week of Coast Guard Festival. Previous proven work experience is preferred and solid work references are expected.

All summer employees are a vital link between the City of Grand Haven and its residents and visitors. Therefore, all candidates must be prepared to function in an “ambassador” role in addition to completing the tasks of their assigned position.

The following areas will be hiring for the summer season of 2015:

WATERFRONT

Staff is responsible seven days per week for the clean and orderly appearance of the City from the waterfront stadium to the pier including parking lots, trashcans, dumpsters, public restrooms and downtown streetscapes. They also oversee the activities at the waterfront stadium. Most employees work an average of 25 hours per week with the schedule covering both days and evenings.

PARKS

Staff is responsible on week days for lawn care associated with the City properties, parks and green space which includes Mulligan’s Hollow, Marina, Harbor Island, Lake Forest Cemetery, etc. Their responsibilities include trimming trees, mowing grass, planting and weeding flower beds, and maintaining the planters throughout downtown. Staff work 40 hours per week Monday through Friday, day shift only.

TROLLEY DRIVER

Harbor Transit Multi-Modal Transportation System operates a seasonal trolley system in the City of Grand Haven. Drivers are required to be trained and secure a CDL with passenger and air brake endorsements, learn a prepared script and act as a liaison for the City of Grand Haven with residents and visitors alike. Staff is scheduled 25-40 hours per week covering both days and evenings; week days and weekends. A valid drivers’ license and clean driving record are required.
