Public Works Director

Grand Haven, Michigan (population 10,412) is seeking an experienced public works professional to lead our full service Public Works Department. Our current staff includes 51 full time and 20 seasonal employees. The Public Works Director is appointed by and is responsible to the City Manager who is appointed by a five member City Council.

Grand Haven is a compact (6.37 square miles) Lake Michigan shoreline community with a seasonal influx of thousands of resort residents and visitors. As the cultural/entertainment hub for the surrounding, developed tri-city area we serve a year ‘round population of approximately 40,000.

The City of Grand Haven is seeking a Public Works Director to manage all aspects of the Department. The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall management of Public Works operations and personnel including engineering, streets, water treatment and distribution, wastewater collection, facilities maintenance, Harbor Island, motor pool, cemetery and parks. In addition this individual will serve as liaison to several boards and commissions.

A Bachelor’s Degree in business, public administration, civil engineering or a related field is required. Licensure as a Professional Engineer is strongly preferred. Seven or more years of management and coordination experience is desired as well as proven supervisory skills.

Public Safety Cadet – Part Time

The Grand Haven Department of Public Safety has a current opening for a Public Safety Cadet. This part-time, non-licensed position is designed for college students currently enrolled in a criminal justice program. Because this position is intended as a practical experience to supplement education, the cadet will cease to be employed upon college graduation. The primary responsibility of this position will be enforcement of parking ordinances. Additional duties may also include assignment in administrative and clerical activities such as record-keeping, taking of telephone messages, computer data entry and citizen inquires.

Minimum Qualifications Include:

• Graduation from High School
• At least 18 years of age
• Ability to walk for an entire shift
• Ability to firmly and impartially enforce parking regulations
• Ability to deal courteously with the public and the interpersonal skills to work effectively with co-workers
• Good communication skills
• Possession of a current valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a motorcycle endorsement

Public Safety Officer III

The City of Grand Haven Public Safety Department is offering an excellent opportunity for a full time Public Safety Officer III. We are accepting applications in order to create a hiring list that we will keep for a period of one year.

Under the supervision of the Public Safety Sergeant, this individual performs the duties of police officer, firefighter; and medical first responder. These duties include enforcing local ordinances and state laws, responding to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, affecting the physical arrest of suspects, operation of emergency vehicles, conducting criminal investigations, and entering areas dangerous to life and health to extinguish fires in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Applicants must have the ability to work under pressure, act quickly and decisively, as well as obtain accurate information through interview, interrogation and observation. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to analyze information and to communicate and interact professionally with other employees, the general public and various professional contacts. The extensive physical requirements for this position include the ability to lift and carry objects up to 165 pounds.

A BA from an accredited college or university is preferred and the applicant must be licensed or have completed all necessary training to be licensed as a police officer through the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards not later than September 1, 2016. Certification level of Firefighter I and II in accordance with the standards set by the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council and current Medical First Responder license is preferred but not required at the time of application. The starting salary is $22.29 per hour based on the current union contract and requires a work schedule of 2184 hours per year.
