Fire Prevention Open House

Nationally, a home fire occurs every 76 seconds, and families should take several steps to prevent them. There are many important measures to take, such as, having working smoke alarms, making and practicing an escape plan, and keeping children away from stoves and fireplaces. We encourage all families from the City of Grand Haven to attend our annual Fire Prevention Week Open House. Along with getting an up-close look at the Public Safety Department, organizers of the open house plan a wide variety of fun and educational activities to interest young and old alike. The Open House features important safety techniques through displays and equipment demonstrations. Prevention resources and information on fire safety are available to make homes safer. Several partner agencies and their equipment are also on site to offer safety awareness and to share how they benefit our community.

Crusade For Toys

Since 1939, the American Legion Post #28 Goodfellows program, through donations from industry, merchants, unions, lodges, clubs, veteran organizations and individuals work hard to make sure that needy children who live in the area have a good Christmas. They furnish each child with new clothes, along with toys, games and candy. Needy children are referred by the Grand Haven Salvation Army.

In 1959, the Grand Haven Fire Department joined the program by holding a “Crusade for Toys” in an effort to gain more toys and donations. Their help has become more successful each year. GHDPS has been joined by Ferrysburg, Spring Lake Township, Crockery Township, Robinson Township and Grand Haven Township.

If you would like to help in the Crusade for Toys please contact:
Officer Mike VanHook at mvanhook@grandhaven.org.  officer VanHook can also be contacted via telephone at GHDPS, (616) 842-3460.
