Reports
Traffic Crashes
GHDPS polices a number of traffic crashes annually. If you are involved in a crash you should call 9-1-1 immediately to report it.
Michigan State law requires that anyone involved in a crash resulting in $1,000.00 of damage or more shall report the crash. In the event you feel the damage is minor and does not meet the $1,000.00 standard, you may exchange information with the other driver including: Name, address, telephone number, insurance carrier, vehicle registration and vehicle identification number (VIN).
A police report is always encouraged regardless of the amount of estimated damage.
If you are a victim of a hit and run and have a description of the other vehicle, contact 9-1-1. If you find your vehicle has been struck, however no suspect vehicle information is available, you may call Ottawa County Central Dispatch non-emergency number at 1-800-249-0911 or contact GHDPS in person or via telephone to file a report.
Persons needing a copy of a traffic crash report for insurance purposes are urged to contact their insurance companies and have them request a copy of the crash report through Online Accident Reports at www.authorizetransaction. Traffic accidents are available on-line 24 hours a days, 365 days a year. The charge for obtaining a traffic crash (UD-10) report on-line is $10.00.
Traffic crash (UD-10) reports can also be obtained IN PERSON at the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety during normal business hours, 8:00am-5:00pm, Monday-Friday. There is a $5.00 fee for reports if purchased at the department. This fee will increase to $8.00 beginning July 1, 2011.
Police and Fire Incidents
GHDPS follows the guidelines set forth in the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) with regard to releasing incident reports. Requests for a public safety report may be made in person, in writing or by mail. GHDPS will respond within five (5) business days of receipt of request. If more time is needed to research your request, you will be notified.
There is a $5.00 charge for the first page and a $2.00 fee for each additional page for all reports. The exception pertains to complex requests requiring labor intensive searches, CDs, videos and any/all preparation costs. Those will be determined on a time and material basis.
